| Hon.
A. C. Appleby Passes Last Wednesday Evening The passing of Hon. A. C. Appleby is regretted by a large concourse of relatives and friends. The end came Wednesday of last week at 9 o'clock. The funeral was held at the First Baptist church of which he was a trustee and deacon, the next day at 3 o'clock, and interment was in the cemetery at Commerce. Mr. Appleby was born on June 10, 1851, so was in his 82nd year. He leaves a widow, nine children and seven grandchildren. He was postmaster at Commerce under President Cleveland, county surveyor several years, clerk superior court, and county treasurer, 1899 to 1907; cashier First National Bank, 1907 to 1920; chairman commissioners of roads and revenues, 1921 to 1925, making a splendid record in all these positions. As a civil engineer and surveyor he was expert and efficient. The unfinished survey of the Dr. W. B. Hardman estate was on his mind, and in his delirium he was still surveying. Mr. Appleby has answered the call of the grim reaper and those most bereaved have the sympathy of their friends. Rev. R. M. Rigdon, pastor assisted by Revs. Shackleford and Johnston, and Hon. M. G. Michael, of Athens, conducted the funeral exercises, while the Commerce male quartet, assisted by the Jefferson Thyatira male quartet rendered several appropriate musical numbers. Mrs. J. V. Alexander and Mrs. J. E. Elrod, two of our neighboring matrons, have yielded to death's embrace in the past three weeks. The families of these are being kindly remembered by friends.
