Mr. Chas. S. Merck Takes His Life With Pistol

Mr. Charles S. Merck, prominent merchant of this city, was found dead at his home on Candler street Monday about 12:30 o'clock, with a bullet hole through his head, and a 32-caliber pistol lying by his side.

When Mr. Merck did not come to his place of business Monday, relatives became uneasy and his brother-in-law, Mr. W. K. Ashford, went to his home, fearing he was ill, and discovered his body.

A note was found in which he stated that his suffering was more than he could bear, and directing the disposition of his business. It was addressed to his brother, Mr. T. M. Merck, and cousin, Mr. B. H. Merck.

Mr. Merck had not enjoyed good health for some time, and was said to be subject to- periods of despondency, and it is thought that he took his life while in this state.

A coroner's inquest was held Monday afternoon, the verdict of the jury being that he came to his death by a gunshot wound, self-inflicted.

Mr. Merck had been in business here for fifteen years or more, conducting a toy store and bicycle shop, and held the respect and esteem of all who knew him. He had been a member of the Baptist church for a long number of years, was a man of highest integrity and possessed a genial nature which made friends of all who knew him. His death is deeply deplored by a wide circle of relatives and friends.

The funeral was held at the home of Mrs. E. J. Ashford on Candler street yesterday afternoon, conducted by Dr. M. M. Riley, and interment was in Alta Vista.
Mr. Merck is survived by his wife and six children, three daughters, Mrs. Rawson Dent of Newnan, Mrs. Harry Fannin and Mrs. Will Wing of Apalachicola, Fla., and three sons, Dr. Fred L. of Marianna,, Ark., Chas S. Jr., of Waycross, and Ralph Merck of Fort Houston, Tex.; two brothers, T. M. Merck of this city and J. F. Merck of Oakwood, and one sister, Miss Mollie Merck of this county.
