Fred L. Merck, 42, Former Gainesvillian, Dies in Train Crash His many friends here will sincerely regret to learn of the death of Dr. Fred L. Merck, former Gainesville boy, which occurred last Thursday at Des Moines, Iowa, as a result of injuries sustained in a train wreck on Tuesday at Metz, near that place. Dr. Merck was on his way to attend a dental convention at San Francisco when injured. Dr. Merck was a son of the late Charles S. Merck of this city, and of Mrs. Merck, who resides here now. He was reared and educated here, and then finished the study of dentistry at the Atlanta Dental College, after which he went to Little Rock, Ark., to practice his profession. Soon after the world war, he opened the Dentists' Laboratory at Little Rock, and was very successful, the laboratory having grown to be one of the largest in the South. Dr. Merck is survived by his wife and two sons, Fred, Jr., and John Albert; his mother, Mrs. C. S. Merck, of this city; one brother, Charles S. Merck of Waycross, and three sisters, Mrs. Will Wing of Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Harry G. Fannin of Apalachicola, Fla., and Mrs. E. R. Dent of this city.
