K. Ashford Paid Last Honors at Gainesville

Mrs. W. K. Ashford, 71, daughter of the late Governor Allen D. Candler
and Mrs. Candler, died Sunday morning at her home here.
Funeral services were held from the residence Monday afternoon with Dr.
R. Bradley Jones officiating, assisted by Dr. R. L. Russell, interment
following in Alta Vista Cemetery.
Born here shortly after the close of the Civil War, she was the former
Miss Florence Candler, and was a resident here most of her life, being
prominent in social, religious and civic circles.
She was a charter member of William Candler Chapter D. A. R., member of
the Longstreet Chapter, U. D. C. and of the Baptist Church and Woman's
Missionary Society.
She was married to Mr. Ashford in 1882 at Alpharetta. He died eleven years
ago.
Surviving are five sons, George, Candler and Jamie Ashford, of Gainesville;
T. Howard and H. Dan Ashford, Orlando, Fla., two daughters Mrs. Tom E.
Lumsden and Miss Karele Ashford, Gainesville; a sister, Mrs. J. W. Clarke,
West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Major William D. Candler and Ben
C. Candler, Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo.

Mrs. Florence Candler Ashford, 71, daughter of the late Governor and Mrs.
Allen D. Candler, and a beloved Gainesville woman, died early Sunday morning
at the residence, 17 Candler street, following a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Candler was born in Gainesville, a member of one of the most prominent
families in Georgia. Her father was Governor of Georgia for four years
at the turn of the century. Governor Candler was first cousin of Asa G.
Candler, Bishop Warren A. Candler and Judge John S. Candler, prominent
Atlantans. Mrs. Ashford attended the local schools and in 1882 was married
to the late William K. Ashford, Gainesville contractor, the marriage having
been performed in Alpharetta. They made their home in Gainesville, he
preceding her to the grave 11 years.
Actively identified in social circles for many years prior to her illness,
she was a charter member of the Colonel William Candler Chapter, Daughters
of the American Revolution and was also a member of the Longstreet chapter,
Daughters of the Confederacy. As a member of the First Baptist church,
she took a prominent part in the activities of the Woman's Missionary
society.
Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon from the residence,
the Revs. Russell Bradley Jones, pastor of the First Baptist church and
Robert L. Russell, pastor of the First Methodist church, officiating.
Interment was in Alta Vista cemetery.
She is survived by two daughters, Miss Karlene Ashford, and Mrs. Tom E.
Lumsden; five sons, Candler, George H. and Jamie Ashford, of Gainesville,
A. Howard and H. Dan Ashford of Orlando Fla; two brother Major William
D. Candler and Ben C. Candler of Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, Mo., and
a sister, Mrs. J. W. Clarke of West Palm Beach, Fla.
