Land Terry She was born in Gonzalez, Florida, on March 18, 1933, the daughter of Henry Proctor and Dixie A. Land. She graduated from Tate High School in 1950. Mrs. Terry earned degrees from Florida Southern College (B.A. 1953), the University of Southern Mississippi (M.A. 1966) and Florida State University (Ph.D. 1970). She devoted 38 years of service to the public education system. She was a passionate advocate of quality programs for young children. She taught at Brentwood, C.A. Weis and West Pensacola Elementary Schools. She served a term as President of the Escambia County Classroom Teacher's Association and was active in the Florida Education Association. She became a Professor of Early Childhood Education at the University of West Florida, and served as Chairman of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Her survivors include: her husband of 49 years, William M. (Bill) Terry; her mother, Dixie A. Land of Gonzalez; and her three children: daughter Laura Ann and husband Keith L. Howard of Lafayette, California; son, William H. Terry and wife Cindy of Pensacola, and daughter Mary Elizabeth and husband, John Pride Brooks of Chandler, Arizona. Mrs. Terry took great joy in her six grandchildren: Mary Katherine Howard, Elizabeth Anne Howard, William Elijah Terry, Steven Edward Terry, Laura Jamieson Brooks and John Dixon Brooks. She also enjoyed her two step-grandchildren, Heather Wilson and Melanie Ebitz and her three step-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Terry had five brothers and one sister. They are: Dr. Warren A. Land, Columbus, MS, H.Culver Land, Pensacola, D. Alan Land (deceased), Henry P. Land Jr., of Shawnee, OK, Elaine L. Barrow of Pensacola and David D. Land of Weatherford, OK. She was surrounded by an extended family of nieces and nephews. They are: Todd Land, Beth Easterlind, Blane S. Land, Barbara F. Land, Sheri Isgrigg, Stacy Land, Gwenith Helen Shiver, Carol A. Hawthorne, Alan D. Land, Henry Proctor Land III, and Amy Kocur. Mrs. Terry was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pensacola where she served as a member of the Board of Directors for Noah's Ark, an early childhood education center. In lieu of flower, donations may be made to The Noah's Ark Scholarship Fund at First United Methodist Church. Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, Highway 29, Cantonment, FL is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held at Faith Chapel Funeral Home North, Hwy 29 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Thursday, April 4, 2002. Dr. Henry Roberts will officiate at services to be held at Faith Chapel North on Friday, April 5, at 10:30 am. Burial will be at Old Spring Hill Methodist Cemetery in Santa Rosa County. Pallbearers will be: A.A. Benton, Jr., John Pride Brooks, Keith L. Howard, Andrew Kocur, Todd Land and Blane S. Land. Honorary pallbearers will be: Barry Shiver and Terry Hawthorne. |
