Transcribed from a hand-written page in a Merck/Wing scrapbook; no dates visible. Numerous poems, etc., are both transcribed and pasted in, but this is the only one that was signed, so I believe it was written by Evelyn J. Ashford. Although no dates show, Evelyn was born in 1835 and died in 1923.

Forget me nots

There is a wish?... that all have known
Whatever be their lots
That's when life's passing hours are flowery
They may not be forgot

This stamped upon the Hero's deeds
However dark their name
For this the War every soldiers bleeds
To gain the needs of Fame

And who would wish to sink to rest
Within the lonely graves
If time should end across his breasts
Oblivious darkness brave?

"Friends," I ask so sure of this fame
To grace my humble lots
Content if here I place my name
And write Forget me nots.
