This section of our web site contains some interesting "extras" that I have generated, as well as serving as a catch-all for some interesting and whimsical bits of information that I found. Lots of family members kept receipts; on a historical note, I have a receipt from J.Y. Ashford from 1872; we also have a receipt for a set of teeth from Nicaragua in 1949! Enjoy.

Timber/Hardwood Related Photos
As most family members know, the lumber industry and its associated history played a large part in our family history too. A visit to my Uncle Burt (C.A. Weis III) during Christmas 2001 yielded dozens of photographs of both historic and family interest. Photos include Pensacola, Alexandria, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico, Belize and more.

Application for Confederate Veteran's Benefits, J.C. Land, 1902
In 1902, James Calvin Land applied for veteran's benefits after serving in the 15th Confederate Calvary. I found copies of his application online at http://www.floridamemory.com/.

Funny newspaper clipping found in the Merck/Wing scrapbook; Ashford Daniel and a friend accidentally locked themselves in a (thankfully) empty bear cage. I would guess this took place in Tallahassee.

Evelyn Jane Appleby Ashford Biography
Evelyn Jane Appleby Ashford dictated this biography herself while visiting her daughter in 1908. Lots of references to Bishop Thos. Fielding Scott.

Poem by Evelyn J. Appleby Ashford
This poem was hand written in the large Merck/Wing scrapbook that has been the source of much information on this web site. This was the only poem signed, though, so I believe it was written by Evelyn J. Appleby Ashford (1835 - 1923).

International Ancestry Guild Research on the Surname Wing
I don't have an original copy of this but it looks like it appeared on a very formal certificate. No date or source.

School Receipt, 1872
The text reads, "Received of J.Y. Ashford $27.50 payment in full for tuition of son William for Spring Session 1872. S.F. Trimble"

Receipt for Replacement Teeth
My grandmother, Dorothy Wing Weis Swofford, must have found this as funny as I do. She saved a receipt for replacement teeth lost in a fire! The text reads, "One upper and lower teeth with two gold teeth For $290, Elisea Ingram Castillo (??)" In Nama's writing at the bottom it says, "Bluefields - teeth of cook - lost in fire - 1949."

Dorothy Weis Issued Back Seat Driver's License
I guess other people's driving - specifically my father's - made Dot Weis nervous. He went to the trouble of getting her a special Back Seat Driver's License, and she went to the trouble of saving it. I can't vouch for her in the 1950s, but in the 1980s? Her driving scared me silly!

This invitation to H.M. Weis to attend a briefing at the White House was issued in 1969, during the Nixon Administration. Attendees included Richard Nixon, David M. Kennedy and George P. Schultz.

Signed J.C. Krug, Chairman, War Production Board.
